En su concierto registrado en el album Live at Leeds, Townshend se refiere a esta canción de nueve minutos como una mini ópera épica y la presenta como el padre de Tommy...

Hemos programado de vez en cuando A Quick One While He's Away en Galaxy 94.3 fm, llena de referencias de humor británico, encaja perfectamente con el tono que hemos transmitido por radio durante los últimos tres años...

La parte de la canción donde se repite la palabra cello fue hecha en forma de chiste; el grupo quería una sección de cuerdas en la canción, pero no tenían dinero y les salía muy cara la idea del arreglo, entonces se pusieron a repetir la palabra cello donde se supone debería de sonar este instrumento...
